"/> Announcement | 1st IASC Commons Virtual Conference 2018 - The International Association for the Study of the Commons

Welcome to the first IASC Commons Virtual Conference!

We welcome presentations on diverse types of commons varying from natural resources management and urban commons, to knowledge commons and health commons. We also embrace multiple methods and studies may use case study analysis, action research, experiments and gaming, modeling and other methods.

WHY A VIRTUAL CONFERENCE

The reason we organize a virtual conference is to provide a low cost and low carbon footprint opportunity to interact with other IASC members - with no costs for flying around the world, accommodations or getting a visa.

We realize that a virtual conference will not provide the same experience as an in-person conference, but we expect that this still leads to a lively interaction between the participants. As such we hope to have more participation by people who otherwise cannot come to in-person conferences.

HOW IT WORKS

During the conference, November 12-30, videos of the presentations will be available on this conference website. Questions and answers will also take place online during this period. In order to access the material you need to be an IASC member in good standing.

ABOUT VIDEO PRESENTATIONS

Instead of traveling to the conference to attend panels and deliver a talk, speakers will create a video of their talk with a maximum length of 15 minutes. This can be done with a desktop computer, laptop, smartphone or other device. You can film yourself giving a talk or have a narrated slide show, or pursue a more ambitious edited video which combines you talking in your office, or in the field, slides and animations. Giving the increase of relevant software availability, it is now possible, and relatively easy, to record a talk of good quality.

Participants should submit their video no later than November 1, 2018 (11:59pm MST).

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR VIDEO PRESENTATION

Video files should be sent to iasc@asu.edu using WeTransfer, by the submission deadline November 1st, 2018 and include as part of the message or in a separate text document: the title of the presentation, name of the presenter/s, name of other authors if applicable, affiliations, and a short abstract of no more than 250 words.

Videos must be submitted in one of the file formats supported by YouTube (.MOV, .MPEG4, .AVI, .WMV, .MPEGPS .FLV, 3GPP and WebM) and should be no longer than 15 minutes! Each video will be evaluated and acceptance for inclusion in the program depend on the following:

  • Length of video is not more than 15 minutes
  • Presenter is an IASC member in good standing on November 1, 2018
  • Presentation is about academic research on the commons or practitioner’s perspectives, and not political manifests
  • Presentation is in English

HOW TO REGISTER

The conference is available for free for all IASC members in good standing. To become a member or to renew your membership click here. Registration is now closed.

HOW TO ATTEND

During the period of November 12-30, you can attend the virtual conference by clicking on the ATTEND button at the top of the screen. After the conference ends you'll see a VIEW ARCHIVE botton.

CERTIFICATE OF PRESENTATION

Those who submit a video presentation will receive a Certificate of Presentation by the end of November, 2018.

As part of the 1st IASC Commons Virtual Conference we will host a commons video contest. This contest is open to anyone, and we welcome contributions from high school classes, NGOs, commons scholars etc.

To participate in this contest one does not need to be an IASC member. Only IASC members, however, will be allowed to vote for their favorite video.

Make a video to communicate knowledge about the commons to a broader audience in 3 minutes and win $3000. If this sounds appealing you can find detailed information at Commons Video Contest.

Please help us spread the word about this contest!
